Using Melodyne in the Music Industry

Melodyne is software that works as a plugin for your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) such as ProTools and Logic X. It wields the user with the capabilities to accurately and effectively manipulate the pitch, length, and amplitude of a given vocal or instrumental. Melodyne is an essential tool for engineers to be competitive in today’s entertainment industry.

When people talk about vocal manipulation software, Auto-Tune is often brought up, but after using Melodyne, I found that it provides far superior control, accuracy, unbelievable realistic results, and is user friendly. Even though Melodyne is mostly known for correcting the timing and pitch of vocals, it can also be used to correct polyphonic instrumentation. This means, if I were to track an artist who accidentally strummed an A Minor chord on a guitar where the part of the song was suppose to be an A Major chord, Melodyne can separate each individual note and give me the ability to change the note into a proper A Major chord (KVR Audio, 2015). This is an incredibly powerful tool for a mix engineer because such a mistake would normally need to be re-tracked costing the studio time and money. However, Melodyne can correct the mix using mathematical algorithms that are so accurate a human ear cannot tell the difference!

(AutoTune vs Melodyne)

After using Melodyne I realize it is absolutely necessary for producing the consistency and quality I strive for; it’s my go-to application for vocal and instrumental corrections and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be competitive in today's music industry.
